THE LOCKDOWN

The Lockdown Day 15

Well, here we are, the two, week mark.  I have to say, everyone around here is now wearing masks when they go out in public, at least the majority are.  It’s a strange scene.  Fairly surreal in a way.  They’ve put plastic barricades up at the pharmacy and around the cashiers at the grocery store.  There’s marked spots of where you are to be and arrows pointing to traffic directions in aisles and signs marking clearly where the six-foot mark is so we can all practice social distancing.

Again, it’s like living in an episode of The Twilight Zone or something.  You know things are a certain way, but you can’t prove it and although certain changes are obvious, they just seem so out there that it’s hard to wrap your head around.

I was talking to my best friend today over the phone and while we were sharing stories back and forth about people we knew that had gotten let go from their jobs and are struggling, we kinda started thinking that maybe some companies are using this layoff time as an excuse to get rid of employees they just don’t want or can’t afford anymore.  I mean think about it, there may be the mandate saying that they can’t FIRE you for missing work because of the COVID-19 virus, it doesn’t say they can’t replace you while you’re gone and it doesn’t say after the layoffs your job has to be there when this is all over.  So, wouldn’t this be a perfect time to weed out the less desirable employees or the ones that have been around so long they make tons of money for doing very little work?  Just a thought…

I still say this whole stay in place order is making everybody moody.  I am surprised that domestic violence calls haven’t gone up in my area.  I fully expected them to with people being stuck at home, no job, no pay, bills piling up, stress piling up, kids out of school for the year in some areas, I mean the stress has got to be unbearable for some people.  I just thought at least a few people would have lost it by now.

The good news is, they haven’t.  The bad news is we are seriously compromising the very core of what it means to be American citizens in order to protect ourselves from this virus and once we have given up these various rights and liberties, it’s not like the government is going to give them back when this is all over.  BUT we’ll still be here and still be alive.

Now, I have been waiting and watching out my windows randomly at night to see if there are any of the undead roaming around looking for brains or pot or whatever it is they live on nowadays.  Fortunately, all I see strolling up into my front yard are stray neighborhood cats and deer from the woods nearby.  And the deer don’t look radioactive or anything, I mean, they aren’t glowing green and they don’t have glowing red or orange eyes or anything like that.  No weird appendage additions or subtractions.

I will admit, and I smile from ear to ear as I write this part, I am thrilled to pieces the little middle school kids aren’t in school right now.  They walk by my house and break the bricks in the decorative wall that lines the sidewalk at the edge of my lawn.  Now, I’ve gone out there and talked to the ones I’ve caught and I can assure you, I am more than likely thought of as “the crazy white bitch that lives in the corner house”.  And I’m okay with that.  Lol.  They’re lucky it’s me and not someone like my father, the former cop.  Still, it’s been sooooo nice to not have to pick up the broken bricks or their trash or guard my house like it’s Fort Knox for what I consider to be ridiculous reasons because these kids don’t have the sense they were born with.  I would love to see just one of them get chewed out by one of their Moms because I caught them on my camera destroying my private property.   No summer for you, kiddo.  Sorry.  Too bad, so sad, buh-bye.  And yet they are clever little buggers, I’ll tell you that.  It’s like somehow, they know when they cameras are working and when they aren’t.  But now they are on all the time around the clock so they are going to have to be careful. If school ever starts back up that is.

So, no REAL craziness here BUT I do have to get out and go to the store tomorrow so, we will see how that goes.  Could be something nutty and worthwhile happening there.  You never know.

Until then, stay safe, stay healthy and thanks for reading!
